Matt Vogt, a 34-year-old dentist from Indianapolis, has qualified for the U.S. Open at a country club outside Pittsburgh, U.S. media recently reported.
“I told you I was going to try not to cry,” said Vogt, who was once a caddie at Oakmont and now practises dentistry in Indiana, in an interview with the Golf Channel.
Vogt’s qualification for the U.S. Open is bittersweet. He lost his father two months ago. When asked about him by the Golf Channel, Vogt pointed to a ribbon on his hat.
“This is him,” he said.
Vogt joins a list of qualifiers from local and sectional events, including Harrison Ott, Grant Haefner, George Duangmanee, Max Moldovan, James Nicholas, George Kneiser, a-Mason Howell, Jackson Buchanan, Brady Calkins, Riley Lewis, a-Zachery Pollo, Joey Herrera, Philip Barbaree Jr., a-Frankie Harris and Austen Truslow.
The field is nearly set for the 125th U.S. Open, which will take place June 12–15 at Oakmont Country Club. The USGA has reserved six spots for golfers who move into the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking after this week’s events.
