If you are thinking about straightening your smile, but prefer an alternative to traditional braces, clear aligners might be an option for you. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, these transparent, plastic-like trays are far less noticeable than metal or ceramic braces. They can correct various issues, including gaps, overbites, underbites and crowded teeth. Our practices provide SureSmile Clear Aligners for patients right in the office.

How do clear aligners work?

Before you receive your clear aligners, your dentist or orthodontist will develop a personalized digital treatment plan that precisely maps out your teeth’s movements. From there, the clear aligners are created to conform perfectly to your teeth. They are designed to apply the right amount of pressure to gradually guide your teeth into place.

How do clear aligners differ from metal braces?

As noted above, a key difference between clear aligners and braces is visibility. Clear aligners are nearly invisible when worn, offering an inconspicuous way to achieve a straighter smile. Clear aligners can also be removed for short periods of time, such as to eat and drink, brush and floss, or attend special occasions. Braces, on the other hand, cannot be removed. Keep in mind that patients should wear their clear aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours per day to achieve optimal results.

Who is a good candidate for clear aligners?

Clear aligners are suitable for a wide range of patients, from children to older adults. However, they may not be appropriate for all orthodontic problems. Clear aligners are generally more suitable for those who require less extensive tooth movement or rotation, whereas patients with more severe orthodontic issues may require braces. In addition, not all patients will be disciplined enough to keep their clear aligners in for the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day. In those cases, metal braces may be more appropriate.

If you think clear aligners might be right for you, ask about them at your next appointment! Our team is happy to discuss your specific needs and the treatment options that might work for you. We look forward to helping you achieve a healthier, more confident smile!
