Invisalign has been a treatment for many patients looking to improve their smiles. However, as with any treatment, a few common orthodontic mistakes can lead to less-than-stellar results. To help you avoid any common pitfalls, we have made a list of the most common orthodontic mistakes so you can avoid them and get the most out of your treatment. Read on to learn more!

Leaving the Aligners in All the Time

Invisalign is made to be worn for 20 to 23 hours a day, but many patients make the mistake of leaving them on all the time. While it might seem like this would be beneficial, it could actually cause the aligners to become loosened and not fit well. This could lengthen the treatment time and reduce its effectiveness. You will have to remove your aligners for around two hours. You could divide this time into much smaller increments throughout the entire day, as you eat and brush, or for a much longer period. Just make sure to brush your teeth and aligners every time you put them back in.

Wearing Aligners While Eating

Eating with Invisalign aligners is another orthodontic mistake. It could cause them to become warped or stained. Not to mention, it could be quite uncomfortable. Make sure to remove the aligners before eating and brush your teeth after. If you do happen to eat with your Invisalign aligners in, make sure to brush them as soon as you can. You can also use Invisalign’s own cleaning crystals to remove and build-up or bacteria.

Using Strong Mouthwash and Toothbrushes to Clean Your Aligners

One other common orthodontic mistake people make with Invisalign is using strong mouthwash to clean off the aligners. This could actually harm the aligners since mouthwash contains alcohol, which could make them brittle and dry. You should only use Invisalign’s cleaning crystals or a milder soap to clean your aligners. It’s also not a great idea to use toothpaste since it can be abrasive and harm your aligners. Toothpaste is made to clean your teeth, not plastic. Also, you have to avoid using a hard-bristled toothbrush, as this could scratch the aligners and cause them to become quite cloudy. Instead, use a soft brush and gently brush off the aligners. This will help remove build-up without harming them.
