Snowmageddon hit Charlottesville at the tail end of winter break. Here’s a bit of life lately!
Snowmageddon
No the snow wasn’t really that high, but the plows have made several giant mountains in town! And it hasn’t really been above freezing for two weeks, so it’s all still there. The good news is the boys have been sledding a TON and we are loving the winter life now that they’re in school all day and sledding in the afternoons.
Snow House
Snow House Melting
The roof ice is seriously scary! I almost got hit with some from a building downtown that might have killed me or someone else if it landed on my head. We have snow guards on our front roof, but it’s still sloshing off in chunks!
Cozy Inside
Meanwhile inside, things have been very cozy! Freshly made snuggle bed:
Sauna blanket warmup!
The perfect life hack for a snow day is to have someone warm up the sauna blanket and climb inside to quickly warm up from toes to fingers! I worked in there one morning when I was feeling chilled.
Book Time
Birch and I brought a bunch of books up to my bed to read, and he read this Star Wars phonics book all by himself! Great gift for a 5-6 year old who loves Star Wars.
Puzzle Season!
Minecraft puzzles with Birch. I even like doing kid puzzles!
ACAC Photo Puzzle
This ACAC group ex puzzle from a 2015 photo was a birthday gift! It was exciting to piece together people I know.
Plant Ladies
I am loving this Plant Ladies puzzle I borrowed from Ellen. The colors are similar, but the patterns are all different!
Wooden Puzzles
And lastly, have you tried wooden puzzles??? Instead of cardboard the pieces are thick and made of wood. I felt like I was in a Survivor challenge! The puzzle moves a bit, but it’s SO satisfying to drop the pieces together. This sailing ship was a gift for Birch, and I just bought this butterfly too!
Send Hugs
Nona and Birch did this art project together – send a hug in the mail with life size arms and hands.
Not Broken
And speaking of hands, Mazen’s wrist is not broken! He fell in gym and heard a crack, which made for an interesting afternoon of x-rays. Luckily he just had to wear a brace for a few days.
If you have dry hands or super dry skin this time of year, try the new Biome Body Butter from Dime. They sent me a sample and it’s amazing! Kind of like lotion meets balm. It smooths on like a lotion but has the staying power of a balm. Get 20% off with the code katheats and my link.
Brunchin’
Katie, Sean and I went to the Kimpton Hotel’s restaurant Birch and Bloom for brunch. Highly recommend! That avocado toast was smashing good. (Get it?!)
First Basketball Game
We went back to Birch and Bloom for drinks before Sean’s first basketball game. Holly went to UVA and Katie grew up here, so they had been many times. It was a 9pm and too late for me, but we had a great time eating ice cream and watching the Hoos come back and almost win it.
Glow Yoga
Another fun indoor event – Glow Yoga at ACAC!
We had body paint and a great vinyasa class with Liz on a Saturday evening.
Kath Eats Real Food

Blue Apron Bang Bang Shrimp
This sauce was one of my all-time favorites from Blue Apron!!
