How I Tested the Weighted Vests

To find the best weighted vests, I first spoke with fitness experts for their insights on what to look for in a quality vest. With this expert input in mind, I researched dozens of options from top, trusted brands. Then, I tested 15 weighted vests for a total of 90 hours, wearing them while walking, running, hiking, and strength training. When testing weighted vests, I rate them based on the following key attributes.

  • Fit: When I first try on the weighted vest, I evaluate how easily it can be tightened or loosened to achieve a snug, secure fit. Does it feel like it can accommodate different body shapes? Does the clothing I wear underneath it affect the fit?  As I move in the vest, I determine whether it stays in place comfortably.
  • Comfort: I put the vests through the rigors of various workouts, including bodyweight exercises, interval training, running, walking, and hiking, and note how comfortable they feel while I’m exercising. Does pressure from the vest cause any soreness or discomfort? Is there any digging, rubbing, or hot spots? I also note if the vest is breathable for at least thirty minutes of wear.
  • Weight Adjustability: For the adjustable weight vests, I test them with various loads to see if the level of performance or comfort changes depending on the weight used.   • Durability: At the end of each testing period, I inspect the vest to assess its durability. I examine the seams, closures, and adjustment mechanisms. Are there any signs of significant wear and tear? Is the vest affected by exposure to sweat?
  • Value: To assign a value score to each weighted vest, I consider its cost only after evaluating it against all the key attributes mentioned above. I consider whether the price is fair based on the vest’s overall performance. I also consider whether I would pay full price or wait to purchase it on sale.
