I like to think of my bodycare routine as a “choose your own adventure” situation.
At any given moment, I have somewhere between 20 and 30 products in rotation, which I mix and match depending on how my skin’s feeling, the time of day, and my general vibe. There are creamy washes for dry spells and foaming formulas for body breakouts; exfoliants that range from light and gentle to so thick and grainy they could polish a diamond; and an entire wardrobe of lotions, butters, and oils that span from thin and gel-like to rich enough to frost a cake. And don’t even get me started on the scents (spoiler: there are many).
With that much competition on my shelves, it takes a lot for a product to earn favorite status. If I’m going to sideline the rest of my beloved lineup and reach for the same thing day after day, it needs to check a lot of boxes—delivering not just on performance (how my skin looks and feels), but on sensory experience, too (how it makes me feel while I’m using it).
Recently, though, I found not one but two products that rose above the rest.
Enter: MUTHA’s new Detox Greens collection, which reimagines two of the brand’s most iconic products—the Buffing Bar and the Body Butter—with a fresh, herbaceous scent designed to deliver the same calm as a deep breath.
I’ve been familiar with MUTHA for years (the Body Butter has floated in and out of my rotation more than once), but it wasn’t until I tried the Detox Greens formulas that I truly understood the hype. Developed with pregnant and postpartum moms in mind, the collection prioritizes comfort, nourishment, and sensorial ease—which might explain why my full-blown obsession with it began when I was eight months pregnant and in dire need of something to help me feel at home in my ever-changing body.
Though Mutha’s products have always centered on indulgent textures and sensorial experiences, the Detox Greens line takes things to a whole other level—delivering a spa-worthy experience that I, for one, can’t get enough of.
First, there’s the Exfoliating Body Bar. Unlike your usual sugar and salt scrubs, it uses finely milled wood pulp to buff away dead skin, rough patches, bumps, and ingrowns without the sandpaper effect. It balances that gentle-yet-effective grit with cupuaçu seed butter and jojoba oil, plus barrier-supporting vitamins B3, B5, and E to leave skin feeling polished instead of punished.
The circular bar fits comfortably in the palm of my (admittedly small) hands, making it easy to turn every shower into a mini self-massage. It works up into a satisfyingly frothy lather without leaving behind residue or clogging the drain—something I (and the super who inevitably gets the call to unclog said drain) deeply appreciate.
Then, there’s the Body Butter. While the 100-percent natural-origin ingredient list is impressive, what makes it stand out is what’s missing: namely, water and filler. Without dilution, nutrient-dense oils—coconut, rosehip, shea, jojoba, and mango—whip into a velvety butter that melts into skin on contact, leaving it luminous and deeply nourished rather than slick and greasy.
It immediately makes me feel smooth, soft, and hydrated from head to toe, which is no easy feat in 0-degree February weather. Over time, it’s said to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of stretch marks, two benefits that my ever-expanding baby bump and I very much appreciate.
While the formulas are more or less identical to the originals (which I liked but didn’t quite love), the new Detox Greens scent is what’s earned them permanent residency in my routine. It’s spa-like, but not in a heavy-incense, essential-oil-overload kind of way. Instead, it blends eucalyptus, lilac, cardamom, and amber into something that feels both clarifying and warm. The greens and florals hit first to deliver the same sort of brightness as a deep inhale, then the woodsy, ambery base settles in and grounds everything.
And somehow, in the dry down, there’s a faint, nostalgic sweetness that reminds me of Fruity Pebbles. I can’t fully explain it, I just know that I love it.
I’ve always had a high bar for body care, and it’s only gotten higher as my body’s gotten bigger and become a home. Detox Greens has officially cleared it—and I suspect it’ll stay in the rotation long after I graduate into full-blown MUTHAhood motherhood.
